<image:title>Worldviews Drafting - What is ‘The Past Presents’? - We released the first physical magazine, “Black Artists Matter,” and threw a release party outside Youth On Record, a local nonprofit for young creatives. Featured artists gathered to perform, share their thoughts, and be in community during a divisive and isolating time.</image:title>
<image:caption>It was a clear affirmation that while we indeed needed our nurses and doctors, our world also desperately craved creation and community coming out of that time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Worldviews Drafting - The Past Presents: N3PTUNE - That was petrifying to dress how I wanted cuz I was like, fuck, what are people gonna think? (Laughing). Most people would actually tone it down with those thoughts. The only way that I was about to dress how I wanted was to scare the shit out of myself. So I’d wear incredibly skimpy clothes in the most unconventional spaces. I would literally be going to hip-hop events dressed in a fucking leotard and seven-inch boots and a mask. People’d be just looking around: “Who the fuck is that?”</image:title>
<image:caption>Life is a performance, music is a performance. It’s a visceral thing. It’s only visceral when it’s visual… even if you close your eyes, you see something. It’s a matter of if it actually excited them or not. I hear a song, I’m like, geez, I see myself in nine-inch stripper heels, right? Some latex fucking catsuit, this huge hat, and gloves with large fucking nails on them. Those are the things I think about when I hear music. Most people just think of this meadow with a sunset, maybe the ocean. I just see fashion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Worldviews Drafting - The Past Presents: Valentino Valentine - I always say that ballroom has the capacity for healing and transformation. That pairing with therapy was just gorgeous. And they also say therapy is best paired with medication. Some people see a lot of improvement with seeing a therapist, some people would just prefer getting medication, but study shows that paired together is when it’s better. And I feel like paired with ballroom is even better! Ballroom and art have definitely been my medication, to help me unlock those doors and figure out myself.</image:title>
<image:caption>When I went to pursue acting I definitely knew I wanted to perform, and I definitely knew I wanted to be on stage, I wanted to be on film. But I also knew that I felt like I had to take that route, right? Because of my upbringing and society. The school that I went to—the institution doesn’t hold space for one, Black people, two, queer people. And then if you’re in film, it’s like, you might as well stay home, because it’s like, they’re pushing a very cis, straight agenda onto me on what they think will be castable. So it’s not even like they’re working with who I am as a person to curate and hone in on that craft and then take that to the industry. It’s like, let’s force you to be this like, weird thing for the machine. I’m discovering myself, then having these professors pushing this agenda on me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Worldviews Drafting - The Past Presents: Valentino Valentine - Right before the COVID shutdown, we were on such a high, we just had our first ball that was a huge success. Everybody was doing good. We had some major events already in the works that just got canceled. We were on this really good momentum. Everyone in the house at the time were on their own personal journeys of discovery and identity. And honestly, that’s what ballroom offers you.</image:title>
<image:caption>Then it was like, COVID, go sit down. And this space that you feel so affirmed, where you’re having people look at you and say, “yes, I see you, you’re beautiful, what you’re presenting is beautiful,” you didn’t have that anymore. And so you felt isolated not just by being safe, but your whole discovery, and all of those affirmations—what that community brings to you—was just stripped away... it was hard. Luckily, we had already established our house here. So we had weekly video House meetings where we would just check in, talk, hang out, just kind of see how everyone’s sanity was doing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Worldviews Drafting - The Past Presents: Arlette Lucero - “Those Who Have Passed”</image:title>
<image:caption>The main character is Alicia Cardenas. I’ve known her for a long time, but right before she was shot, I got to know her really well. And we worked together at CHAC. We had all these plans. We were gonna get together, and when she died, it was not just a shock and terrible for me, but it was terrible for a lot of people. It was a shock to the community. And I was already hurting because November was when my husband died. She died in December. And my mother died in January of that year. I wasn’t painting it just for me. I was painting it for the community. My husband died. It hurt. When she died. It was like, hurt upon hurt. And so I felt it; I felt it very much. I don’t know. I was devastated, to put it mildly. So I was asked to do a painting in Chicago for Dia de los Muertos. And as I was painting it, I was feeling it. I had, you know, a photo of my husband and I could just see, oh, you were so happy there, and I want to paint you happy. I don’t want to paint her happy. I want to paint her like she is giving to the community. You guys are gone now, But we’re inviting you to come and be with us to spend the day with us. That’s what Dia de los Muertos is all about. We want you to come and join us in our celebration. We’re not grieving, we’re not crying, we’re just loving each other and being with each other.</image:caption>
